Introduction
This ham and cheese meal prep makes the humble sandwich even more simple. Instead of using X amount of a bread loaf, this technique uses an entire sleeve of dinner rolls (and a whole package of deli ham, ideally).
This makes it very easy to plan for, and minimizes leftover stray ingredients.
The idea behind this ham and cheese it to take some dinner rolls, fill them with ham and cheese (and maybe mayo,) then bake until warmed through. While this seems foolproof, there are some things to keep in mind.
Tips for This Ham and Cheese Meal Prep
The Rolls
First, how you cut the rolls really matters. If you cut them all at once, the finished product will be easier to move around, off of sheet pans, etc.
However, cutting them this way can be difficult since you need to get the angle just right. If you don’t, some of your sandwiches can be lopsided – or worse.
You can also cut the rolls into several separate sections, which makes cutting much easier.
However, moving them around like this will take longer and can be irritating. You’ll need to keep the tops and bottoms matched up like a game of culinary Tetris, except you’re hungry and covered in mayo, so it’s not as fun.
The top layer of cheese
You could also separate every single roll and cut them individually. This will take longer than the other methods, but should contain the fewest roadblocks.
The Filling
You’ll also want to consider – big surprise – your choices of ham and cheese.
You’ll want to use a thinly-sliced ham, and ideally it won’t have too much added water, which can makes the sandwiches watery.
For the cheese, I recommend using something like a mozzarella, swiss or havarti. Of course, you can use whatever you want, as long as it melts well.
When baking the rolls, you’ll want to completely cover the pan in foil to help trap moisture. This keep the rolls from drying out and getting hard. I also recommend letting the rolls rest for ~10 minutes after baking to help the cheese finish melting.

Ingredients
12 small dinner rolls* 9 oz thinly-sliced ham, 252 grams 12 slices of cheese mayo or other spread, optional**
Preparation
Cut your rolls in half, group them together***, then add 6 slices of cheese to the bottom. Top that will all of your ham, then another 6 slices of cheese.
Put the tops back on, cover tightly with foil, and bake at 375 F (190 C) for 15-20 minutes.
Notes
* You should be able to find sleeves of dinner rolls at your local food market. You can also just use 12 “normal” dinner rolls – assuming they’re not too big.
** This recipe has a lot of cheese, so these don’t require a spread to keep from being dry. However, mayo certainly isn’t a bad addition, so use it (or another spread) if you’d like.
*** The rolls I use are baked together and come in a single sheet of 3×4. This makes it very easy to add the layers of meat and cheese.
If that doesn’t fit your bread situation, just divide the ham and cheese evenly between the rolls.
