All About Eggroll Bowls
What is an Eggroll Bowl?
An eggroll bowl is a deconstructed eggroll meant to be eaten out of a bowl with a fork or spoon. It features food commonly found in eggrolls, such as chicken, pork and vegetables. However, since they are served in bowls, the eating experience is different and unique.
Why I Made Them
I wanted to make eggrolls, but the rolling, frying, etc was a lot of work. Soon after starting, I thought “what if I could have this without all the effort?”.
That’s what convinced me to try this, and I’m very glad I did.
Why You Should Make Them
They offer the flavor profile of eggrolls, but are significantly easier (and less annoying) to make. They also help you restrict the calories you put in, since a large part of the calories usually comes from the wrapper and oil.
They’re also very tasty. The original was an off-the-cuff meal, but it was so good I immediately made it a recipe.
What You Need to Make Them
You’ll need standard eggroll ingredients like meats, vegetables, and maybe eggroll wrappers, if you want.
The sky’s the limit, so use what you like and/or what you have. However, I have a recipe below if you want a good starting point.
Conclusion and Recipe
Below I have a list of ingredients to make this, as well as the amounts for each. Since this is so easy and quick to make, I really do recommend trying it for yourself.

Ingredients
1.5 cups of shredded cabbage, 143 grams
1 chicken thigh, diced
2 Tbsps vegetable oil, 28 grams
1 tsp rice vinegar, 5 grams
pinch of grated ginger root, about 1/2 tsp
3/4 tsp garlic powder, 3 grams
1/2 tsp kosher salt, 3 grams
pinch of black pepper, about 1/4 tsp
small pinch of red pepper flakes, about 1/8 tsp
fried eggroll wrappers*, as needed
Makes 1 moderate bowl
Preparation
Preheat a pan over medium-low heat. Add your oil, cabbage, chicken and spices**.
Cook until the chicken is done***, stirring occasionally, then turn off the heat and stir in the vinegar.
Garnish with fried eggroll wrappers.
Notes
* To make these, thinly slice some eggroll wrappers and fry them in hot oil until golden brown.
** This includes the salt, pepper, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
*** This shouldn’t take too long, but I recommend cooking for more time rather than less.
If your chicken pieces are large enough to temp with a thermometer, I recommend using one. Also be sure to temp multiple pieces – just in case.
