This chocolate mug cake is great for when you want dessert, but not the leftovers. Since it only makes one serving, you also get the freshest possible results every time.
Best of all, it only takes a few minutes to make and requires minimal ingredients.
What is Mug Cake?
Mug cake is simple cake ingredients made into a batter, then cooked in a coffee/tea mug. Mug cake is most often cooked in a microwave. Since it’s fast and easy to make, it’s a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth on short notice.
What You Need to Make It
To make this mug cake, you’ll need things like flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, and sugar.
Flour
You can use either all-purpose or self-rising flour for this. If you don’t have self-rising, the recipe will list the things you need for leavening this mug cake.
Sugar
I recommend using white sugar for this, but you may be able to use brown sugar or sweeteners as well.
I recommend starting with 50/50 mix of sugar/non-sugar before going all-in on something else.
How to Make Chocolate Mug Cake
Mix Together the Dry Ingredients
The first thing you’ll need to do is mix the dry ingredients together. You really only need to mix the dry; you can just add the wet ingredients without mixing them.
Combine the Wet and Dry Ingredients
Then you’ll want to mix the wet and dry ingredients together. I recommend adding the wet ingredients to the dry so the dry ones don’t float around during mixing.
Pour, Cook, and Enjoy
Finally, you’ll add the batter to a mug (if you haven’t already) and bake/cook. The cook time varies slightly, but you’ll know it’s about done when your kitchen smells like chocolate cake.

Makes one chocolate mug cake
Preparation
In a large mug***, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, salt, and cocoa powder.
Stir in the milk and vegetable oil, then add the chocolate chips if you’re using them.
Microwave for about 60 seconds or until the cake is cooked through.
Notes
* You can also use self-rising flour here. If you do, leave out the baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
** Adding these to the batter will leave you with melted chocolate to go with your cake, making it extra luxurious.
*** Since the cake will rise, you want to use a mug that’s large enough. It should be fine as long as the batter isn’t nearing the very top of the mug.
