Introduction

Like many people, you may have a new year’s resolution to start being healthier. Whether that’s exercising more, being more mindful of your time, or eating more healthy food.

While I can’t help with the first two, I can definitely help jump-start your healthy eating. With this post, I’m showing you 3 healthy oatmeal recipes you can use to start 2022 off on the right track.

The Health Benefits of Oatmeal

Oatmeal (and rolled oats in general) have a lot going for them. For now, I’ll be outlining what I think are the three biggest benefits of eating oatmeal.

  1. Whole Grains

Since rolled oats are a whole grain, they help with satiety, meaning they’ll keep you feeling full for longer.

If you struggle with always feeling hungry, a nice bowl of oatmeal can help stave off cravings and keep your eating in check.

  1. High Fiber

Oatmeal is also quite high in fiber. Along with fresh fruit, it’s one of the easiest ways of getting a regular intake of fiber.

Since all of these recipes also contain fruit, each one gives a significant boost to your dietary fiber needs.

  1. Low Cost

Rolled oats are one of the cheapest goods you can find at the grocery store, along with rice and dry beans. However, they’re significantly more user-friendly than dry rice or beans, making prep easier and less stressful.

The combination of low cost, high fiber, and ability to ward off hunger makes oats an easy choice for a pantry staple.

What You’ll Need to Make These Oatmeals

You don’t need many ingredients to make these recipes; mostly rolled oats, fruit, and a couple of spices. You’ll probably want a bit of salt as well, to keep the oats from being too bland.

These recipes are also great blueprints if you want to change things up yourself. For example, if you like the idea of cinnamon raisin oatmeal but don’t like raisins, you can use apples instead.

Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal

Ingredients

1/2 cup rolled oats, 40 grams

1 cup water, 227 grams

1/4 tsp kosher salt, 1 gram

2 tsps sugar, 8 grams

2-3 Tbsps peanut butter**, 32-48 grams

1/2 banana, cut into rounds

Preparation

Heat the water and salt in a small sauce pan set over medium heat. Once simmering, add the oats, sugar and salt and cook for 3-5 minutes.

Remove from heat and top with the banana and peanut butter, then serve.

Notes

* Instead of sugar, you can also use honey or your choice of sweetener. Just keep in mind that some sweeteners are sweeter than sugar, by volume, so you may need less than 2 tsps.

** For an even healthier oatmeal, I recommend using natural peanut butter. Not only do they contain fewer ingredients, but they don’t contain stabilizers like palm oil, so they spread more easily.

For the best natural peanut butter, look at the ingredients listed. The only ingredients should be peanuts, and maybe salt.
